About

Written by someone who has used these policies at 11pm on a Sunday

Plainly is run by Katie Rattenbury, a senior manager in mental health services with more than fifteen years in the voluntary sector, including deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead duties and out-of-hours crisis management. That means every policy is written by someone who knows what it is like to follow one under pressure.

We work with small charities and community groups across England and Wales, mostly online, with in-person visits for service reviews. Everything is in plain English, aligned with current Charity Commission guidance, and built around how your service actually runs.

  • Plain English, every timeShort sentences, everyday words, and a one-page summary for staff.
  • Diversity built inEvery policy includes a Diversity Implications section: who it might exclude, and what you do about it.
  • Not a law firmWe write practical policies aligned with current guidance. Where you need legal advice, we say so.

Questions

Things people ask first

Can't we just use a free template?

You can, and for some things you should. The problem is that funders spot an unedited template in seconds, and staff do not follow a policy that describes a charity that isn't theirs. We tailor each one to your roles, services and reporting routes, then make it short enough to read.

How long does it take?

A single policy review takes about a week. The five-policy bundle takes three to four weeks, including a draft for your comments. Service reviews are scheduled around a site visit.

Do you work with charities outside mental health?

Yes. Safeguarding, incident management and plain-English policies apply to any charity working with people. Mental health and behaviour that challenges are where we go deepest.

Is this legal advice?

No. We write practical policies and plans aligned with current Charity Commission and statutory guidance. If something needs a solicitor, we will tell you.

Where are you based?

We work online with charities across England and Wales, and travel for service reviews and in-person training by arrangement.
